Project Update: The Monday Delve | 150% Funded + Our Partner Project
11 months ago – Mon, Mar 31, 2025 at 03:17:54 PM

Hello everyone,

For this Monday update, I have to say we're rocking it at 150% FUNDED! Wooo, break out something fun to drink on a Monday at noon. So probably not alcohol haha-- at least not yet. We're likely going to crack that $12,500 goal as we coast into these final 72 hours.

Since we have just 3 days remaining, I thought it would be nice to shout out A Land Once Magic-- about half of you already backed them. But if you back the both of us for physical tiers, you get bonus items with your shipment from me!

For our game, designed Viditya Voleti will be designing out some Relics for you to find in your travels. These will be strange unique items that are unlike anything else in the game.  Viditya is an incredible designer, so I have faith they will be really cool!

For their game, I'm adjusting a few tables in A Land Once Magic that will let you bring tarot cards into the game in place of a playing card deck, because I am the king of Tarot of course.

Looking forward to the final hours up ahead, and seeing what we can make happen!

Thanks all,

The Friday Ride | 145% Funded + The Cover Concept
11 months ago – Fri, Mar 28, 2025 at 01:56:10 PM

Welcome back to Friday my friends,

We are in the home stretch, with just 6 days remaining for the funding!
This grimdark Dungeon Delver gets to exist because you all brought it to life-- and if you're getting this update but haven't backed yet?! Get in here!

Today, we're taking a look at the Cover Art and how it came to be! I told Salty Water the rough composition I wanted-- featuring The Maker of Hands, Trophy Collector, and Malefact Bonecutter (who has not been a fan favorite!) around a campfire on the road. I knew I wanted a lizard mount, a motorcycle, and that was about it. From there, Salty stepped up with the idea of approaching it as a triptych.

Here is the tough composition, referring to the form of reliquary box.
Showing the road in the middle as the theme, with the aeonic rings behind the maker of hands (here is some of my thoughts, I know they don't align their soul to that but their overall atmosphere leaning into that and I'd like to think they collect much material and technology from aeons.) And Malefactic as the theme for Malefact bonecutter, both for the decoration in the corner and the pattern in the back.
Going to adjust the size of character to show more of background but still keep them looking around a campfire in front of trophy collector, which is a pile of skull and bones lit up by blue soul fire. (The pose for characters is referring to the description you provided.)
Also idea for the side panel of the box cover, the border of bone oils and skulls will surround the lower edge and I would like to make the two panel, the one below the character's feet, and the one over character's head with specific patterns, one as extension of sky and one as extension of road. The other two side panels on left and right maybe can feature the ruins, or leave place for texts.

We got to this for the rough cover of the top of the box. Overall it felt pretty spot on for the approach based on the boxes for ZOETROPE and What We Possess. They have become my template for making boxed games, and I'm pretty happy with how it was coming. Then, Salty delved further into the designs for the characters and their mounts in particular.

For the lizard, it's referring to some deep sea fish type of translucent look and glowing at several parts. I think it could be good to use it as the lantern in dark, such as its big eyes. Also it has several parts with feathers and growing excessive bones to echo with the bonecutter's look. For the belly and tail part, I am thinking about being translucent so that we can see the inner organs and the victims it consumes to emphasize on the theme of sacrifice.

For the motorcycle, because among the characters we have, the mechanical elements aren't too strong, I feelt we cannot really use too heavy of an industrial look for the motorcycle. I'm considering leaning into the armor for horse to coverup the metal structure of the motorcycle and beneath it are the two rings and one regular wheel. To connect two rings using tangled pipes and the bigger ring is mostly broken with gears and basic steam engine parts to fill out the center. And considering the maker of hands based on the design doesn't have physical hands, I'm going to have the horse saddle for supporting torso part with an extra "handle" to fix the arms to.

And that brings us to the final cover of the box! That covers the main art assets we had pre-campaign, now next week is our final days so we're going to explore what's ahead, what our collab is offering with A Land Once Magic, and more of what to expect in this game ahead!

The Poll!

First though, before we part ways for the weekend, I think we should take a final look at that darn poll.

Oh gosh, the Trophy Collector in first?! Maker of Hands and Caged Wraith tied for second? Color me surprised y'all. The Bonecutter is still in last, I'm sure he's seething over that one. For your own sakes, I'll give you one more chance to make this right. There's no telling what he might do!

See you all Monday,

The Wednesday Rest | 141% Funded + The Character Concepts: The Malefact Bonecutter
11 months ago – Wed, Mar 26, 2025 at 10:19:32 AM

Welcome back to the campfire friends, take a rest, share a story or song, and eat your fill.

Today we are at 141% funding, and that means we're still a bit from the first stretch goal. However, there's always a nice little rush at the end so I think that's likely to still come around!

Today, we wrap up our 6 Character Concept series of updates. Now you'll have seen them all so you can vote with confidence on the poll-- but first, we have to give space to the Malefact Bonecutter, who would not appreciate being put at the bottom of the poll for so long!

The Malefact Bonecutter finds itself aligned with the Malefact creatures that hide within the bowels of Prosipio. Malefact are bloody, sinewy, bony creatures that use their own flesh, bleed, and bone as weapons, building materials, and more. The Bonecutter has learned their ways, using a unique in-curved knife to open their body up to extend out muscley, sinewy, boney weapons of their own. I conceived of them early on as the ultimate glass cannon style characters, actively taking damage from their own attacks as they build up massive strikes. And they are the greatest damage dealers in the game. But when conceiving of their power to make a second path for them to take, I realized the alternate could be true-- giving up Health to craft boney armor that absorbs damage longer term, reducing all damage taken. Either play style will be risky, always giving up health for benefits, but they can be either the hardest tank in the game or the highest damage dealer-- with no inbetween. But they must be careful when delving in Malefact areas, since they are more susceptible to those they have aligned their souls with!

"Here is the very very rough idea for malefact bonecutter, I hesitate between ideas, leaning into the look of mimicking knight and gladiator, but the armor I want to keep on them is basically only on torso and helmet. On their upper body they are wearing the skin from other rodent, loosely tied to arm, and on lower body using mix of lizard scales and mixture skins to be pants that leaving openings for his blade cutting to form whatever weapons and armor they desire. And they also have the remaining parts of the rodent skin hanging from their waist, a big long tail hanging there like their second tail. I will mainly focus on bone and teeth as their motifs, but general look I'll modify when refining the drafts, before that I’d like to hear about your ideas, with more bones and brutal weapons, they are having the Aztecs look while the armor on them can keep them with some level of knights or warrior look."
"Based on your feedback I have shifted to more of the Gladiator vibe for Bonecutter, also added up a set of bone decoration like the winged hussar on the back to echo with the helmet design. Also add up iron trap element on the overall design, which I think could work well with the jaw skull on the helmet. In the illustration will be slightly more bone spikes than the usual look to show the moment that they generate blade and spikes out of the wound. The fabric all over is only sheet of skin and scale tied to the skin, the exposed part will show the scars and weird veins over the skin. Also the design on the blade and also later shield or armor I will look into some animal skeleton, for this blade I was referring to the sawshark."

A truly grisly ally for the dark delves ahead, but one who anyone would be lucky to have. Their cruelty to themselves is only ever for the gain of the party, making them an ideal team player. Sometimes the weapons of the enemy are the greatest tools.

Let me know your final opinion on the Class Poll now that you've seen all 6 classes!

The Monday Delve | 139% Funded + The Character Concepts: The Maker of Hands
11 months ago – Mon, Mar 24, 2025 at 02:25:42 PM

Welcome back dungeon delvers, let's get into it!

We are just under 140% funded, and I think we can do better than that. So let's share around when we can! HISTORIC has so many more goodies to unlock if we can just break some of these stretch goals! :)

Since we finished 4 classes already, we're down to the final two: The Maker of Hands, and The Malefact Bonecutter. These are two surprising options to me, I figured the poor Trophy Collector would stay at the bottom as he had been, but then he shot past the last two. Now, I am biased-- the Maker of Hands is my favorite design conceptually and visually, so I'm glad to finally get to them, and see them bump up the poll now.

So let's do it!

The Maker of Hands, or The Hand Smith (vote in the comments on the name for me!), was a character concept I had early on of someone who created magic floating hands as a magic system. Hands are currency. You can make them and do hand to hand fighting with them, or just a rush of hand missiles, or you can craft them with designs and elements in them that can be cracked as a vessel to release its energy. Salty Water ended up having a genius idea of the tail having the hammer head on it, and using the back of it to crack open or break hands, which is super neat. I imagined the Maker as someone who can be a light, dancing melee fighter, or who can be the everywhere support, whose hands help push ally's weapons to hit their marks, pilfer items, or magically aid someone. As a support dancer/mage, I think they have a fantastically unique niche and a really cool unique aesthetic!

Starting with our sketches, Salty had this to say!
" Here is the rough sketch of maker of hands, maybe a bit varied from the information you offered me but I will add some items I forget such as the books and also some more tools/hands/accessories.
The idea for this one is mainly focused on Mesopotamian decorative elements and jewelry, also the art deco aesthetic, arm bonded before chest and holding a cracked metal plate on the chest where they hammer with their tail hammer to make hands. So radiated lines is a main design element for this character. Also having jewelry threading in the skin to cover up the partly burned skin. Magic hands I am thinking of the form as being like cracked mirror shards that with the hit by the other end of hammer can be destroyed (just some of my thoughts when I'm designing this.) And for the bells (hanging on ends of straps) I’m thinking about using the shape of hands that are hanging from their hollowed out ears."
"I get Maker of Hands's draft figured out, refined their accessories, the hands hanging from ears are all made in metal so naturally they clashing when moving around to make the noise like wind chimes. The magic hands will looks like shards, or mosaic forming into hand shape, the center of it has the cracks that can be aimed by the other side of hammer to destroy."

Alright, Wednesday will see the end of these character updates when we take a look at the Malefact Bonecutter! But I'd love to hear from all of you in the poll how you feel about the Maker of Hands below! As more of these updates come out, I see more people have new favorites, and that's awesome.

Can't wait to share what each class's ultimate abilities will be when we hit that $12,500 goal!

The Friday Ride | 134% Funded + The Character Concepts: The Trophy Collector
12 months ago – Fri, Mar 21, 2025 at 01:25:53 PM

Welcome back to the road my friends,

I am impressed to see that the votes on the poll have fluctuated! The Trophy Collector was bottom of the bucket, last place. But something happened here and now it has votes enough to be the next character concept we take a look at!

The Trophy Collector, somewhat interchangeably The Collector of Skulls, came to my mind as two of my favorite things. 1), a character who has an array of weapons on their back that they can pull on for combat. 2), a character who is a bulwark of metal. In an early iteration of the game, there were classes you picked, then secondary classes you picked. You could go all-in on one class to get stronger effects in one vein, or go for two to get a unique blend. This is something I would consider mixing into the game with an expansion still. But I considered this Bulwark character to mix with the Antiquarian class to become this collector of weapons character. Instead of high damage with an axe or sword, they would have a fan of weapons on their back that they could draw, and a card that let them attack with all their weapons in one go.

The final version ended up being either The Banner or The Trophy. These two paths for him make him either a passive buff for all his allies, or a great big buff for himself, based on the items he carries. He does not need to activate powers necessarily, merely open the Aura for the delve, and his allies will gain benefits from the Aura for the rest of the fight. These buffs are small, but they add up! He's a powerful bulwark entity that will look out for his allies and be the great tank fighter everyone needs in their lives.

Not pictured in any of the art below is the fact that there will be some kind of option in the game that lets people play with two shields. That's my favorite thing in any game ever, when you can be a just beast of an armored shield creature, rushing people down and defending yourself and allies. It's just too cool-- and if I had the chance to add a third Path to the game for each Road, the Trophy Collector would be The Aegis. It was a high stretch goal, but it looks out of reach for now. Always space for an expansion!

Now, let's hear from the artist, Salty Water, as the design came together. (It was the last one we did art for, but is the 4th we're sharing in these updates!)

Now is the last character of all six. For trophy collector I'm thinking about the chain and nail motif to add on him, make the weapons and relics (especially the weapons) to be chained on him, to show the bond between what he has collected and himself, which is more than simple physical ownership. And a nail penetrate into his chest, to anchor the shelf on his back which is like a part of a wheel to hold the weapons and also combine with banner.
Also, add another set of skeleton, mainly the torso part, ribcage and part of spine, above his armor and fix by series of nail to his back. Although for this specific part I don't really think of a reason why he do that, maybe that was in memorial of his past kinship, or his own way of collecting skulls and skeleton on him, so also some different species of skull on right shoulder plate. The armor on him I'm planning on make it like collecting from different places so in some varied style but all used and partly broken, he somehow made them work as a whole set of armor. (Note from Seven: The Collector gathers skulls as well because previous adventurer's skulls can be used as Wells of Souls to revive when you die. It's important for the game!)
Getting the trophy collector draft revisioned, emphasis on the nail and chain elements more, and the items and weapons are chained instead of hanging on belts, also adding some spikes and spear motif onto armor and his very own weapon, generally I want him to look like a moving gravestone, or to say a moving monument that as a representation of the past.

He has quite the banner, what do you think? So one more time my friends, does The Trophy Collector get your vote in the poll? And who will we talk about Monday? The Maker of Hands and The Malefact Bonecutter are both tied with the least votes at the moment. Maybe we can change that when we share what they are about!

Talk to you soon,
